Despite having over 300 assists in his career, Messi is so good at playmaking that that number underrates his abilities, so let's take a look at Messi's big chances created since the 2015/16 season, and see what they have costed to his team.
A modern example is the 2019/20 La Liga season. If they hadn't wasted his big chances created then they would've won the league with 91 points over Real's 86. Another example is the 2016/17 La Liga season, which they would've won due to head-to-head points over Real Madrid if they had taken advantage of his BGC.
Going over to the Champions League now, the infamous Roma and Liverpool comebacks would have been prevented if they hadn't wasted Messi's created big chances, and playing Tottenham in the 2018/19 Champions League final would have perhaps given them another trophy.

Getting to Argentina now, if his team-mate had scored the big chance he provided in the 2015 Copa América final, they would have won the tournament, which would have been a massive accomplishment. The 2018 World Cup qualifiers wouldn't have been so difficult if they hadn't wasted the big chances he created against Venezuela and Peru, which would have left them with 32 points in second place.

In total, out of 227 BGC, he only got 100 assists, which is a conversion rate of 44%, which seems low taking into account that, again, these are big chances that should be scored most of the time.
This is undoubtedly a testament of him being let down often, since this is only since the 2015 Copa América final, and he was surely let down multiple times before, which makes him all the more extraordinary looking at what he's achieved with his team.
