With over 700 goals and over 300 assists, making up for over 1000 goals generated in his career, some would think that Messi's heat map is pretty advanced and close to the box, but in fact he's generally been a bit far from the box actually.
As we can see in this video, Messi's heat map in his La Liga career has evolved over the years, changing from the wings to a more central role, but still away from the box most of the time.
This is yet another aspect that makes him so great. Despite barely playing as a striker (winger, attacking midfielder, false 9, etc.), he still puts up amazing numbers, but it's still another argument for why Messi can't be reduced to just statistics since he's much, much more than that.
