Pre-assists are a very underrated stat. Opta has them in mind, calling them "second assists" instead. This term was coined by Amartey Amar back in 2008 to explain an aspect from Hleb. It has gained more and more relevance over the years, and now Messi has been able to master it, part of his godly playmaking skills.

It doesn't matter at what stat you look, there's a very high chance that Messi leads in it. Pre-assists, as important as they are, are just one of the many things that Messi has mastered in the game of football.
